Dress Codes Explained: What to Wear Where
Getting turned away at the door over your shoes is embarrassing and avoidable. Here's the actual dress code for every type of venue in Manila.
The Short Version
- Poblacion bars: Anything goes. T-shirt and jeans is fine.
- BGC clubs: Smart casual minimum. No slippers, no sleeveless shirts for men.
- High-end clubs (Xylo, OCTOPUS): Smart casual strictly enforced. Button-downs encouraged for men.
- Rooftop bars: Smart casual. A nice dress or chinos and polo.
- Speakeasies: Dress nicely — part of the experience.
BGC Clubs: The Strictest Enforcers

Not allowed:
- Rubber slippers / flip-flops
- Sleeveless shirts for men
- Shorts (at some venues)
- Ripped jeans (at premium clubs)
- Sports jerseys or gym wear
Safe choices for men: Dark jeans or chinos + button-down or polo. Clean sneakers or loafers are fine at most venues. Safe choices for women: Dress, skirt + top, or smart jeans + blouse. Heels not required.

Poblacion: Genuinely Anything Goes
Poblacion's bar scene prides itself on informality. I've seen people in everything from vintage Hawaiian shirts to business attire at 2am — nobody cares.
The only exception: a few of the more cocktail-forward spots (Banter and Jive, The Spirits Library) have a slightly more dressed-up clientele by default, but no formal policy.
Speakeasies and Hidden Bars
Part of the appeal is the atmosphere. Dress like you're going somewhere special:
- Cheshire Speakeasy: Smart casual
- Secret Door: Smart casual
- The Pearl Room: Cocktail attire
What Always Gets You In
When in doubt, this combination works everywhere in Manila:
- Men: Dark jeans or chinos + collared shirt (tucked or untucked) + clean sneakers or loafers
- Women: Dress or smart top + jeans + any shoes that aren't plastic slippers
