Artists', writers' and musicians' bar (formerly Penguin Cafe) known for live music and performance art across two floors plus a loft. Cheap mojitos and simple food; a longtime favourite of Manila's creative crowd.

The Scene

The old Penguin Cafe is back as bar1951, still in Malate, still the artists' and musicians' bar it always was. Two floors and a loft, worn in and comfortable, art on the walls and someone usually performing.

Mojitos are cheap and that's what most people order. The food is simple and easy on the wallet. Live bands and acoustic sets run through the week, and some nights it's performance art instead.

Writers, painters, musicians, and the people who like being around them. Students too, since it's affordable. Weekends fill up fastest. Go if you want a bar with some history to it.
